There are some wedding days that feel carefully placed, and then there are days that simply unfold. Caroline and Jordan’s Hotel Chalet Chattanooga wedding was the second kind, calm, joyful, and full of meaning from start to finish.
The day began at Hotel Chalet in Chattanooga, one of the most unique wedding venues in the city. Caroline got ready inside the vintage train car tucked behind the hotel, surrounded by her mom, her mother in law, bridesmaids, and flower girls. The space felt quiet and nostalgic until one small moment shifted everything. Caroline handed the flower girls their gifts, and the train car softened as quiet smiles spread and the girls lit up with a sweet, unmistakable joy. It was unplanned and loud and perfect, the kind of moment you cannot stage.
This is what documentary wedding photography is really about. Letting moments happen as they are, without rushing past them or turning them into something else.
Inside the hotel, the tone stayed relaxed. Hotel Chalet blends midcentury modern lines with a 1920s European feel, setting the stage for a wedding that felt old money in the best way, timeless but never stiff. Caroline moved through the space slowly, fully present, her Maggie Sottero dress catching the light as conversations and laughter unfolded around her.
Caroline and Jordan chose to wait to see each other until the ceremony. When the doors opened at the Basilica of St. Peter and Paul in Chattanooga, the moment felt sacred and grounded. The Catholic mass was peaceful and reverent without ever feeling rigid. Long pauses, soft light, and the weight of tradition held the room together while they stood calm and joyful, completely focused on one another.
After the ceremony, we took photos at the altar, letting the quiet linger a little longer. From there, they exited the basilica in a horse and buggy, a scene that felt straight out of another era. There was no rush to move on, just time to breathe and take it all in.
Before dinner, we took some fun creative liberties with portraits at the hotel bar, using high flash to give a filmy, nostalgic look and create relaxed, playful images for the couple.
Back at Hotel Chalet, dinner was plated but the energy stayed lively. Conversations spilled across tables before the dance floor filled. One of the most emotional moments of the night came when Caroline dedicated her bouquet to her mom, a gesture that brought the room to a standstill before the celebration continued.
My role throughout the day was exactly where I feel most at home. I am warm and observant, present but never directing the story. I interact when it matters, step in when it helps, and step back when the moment needs space. Because Caroline and Jordan trusted the day to unfold naturally, their images reflect the truth of it. Not just how it looked, but how it felt to be there.
Caroline and Jordan, thank you for choosing presence and for allowing me to document your wedding honestly, joyfully, and without interruption.
